The Washington Redskins released tight end Chris Cooley on Tuesday afternoon, with Cooley making the announcement personally at the team's practice facility.

He was the longest-tenured member on the team, spending eight seasons in Washington.

Cooley was drafted by the Redskins with the No. 81 overall selection in the 2004 NFL Draft out of Utah State and has since gone on to record 428 receptions for 4,703 yards and 33 touchdowns in 108 career games with the team.

The 30-year-old was emotional while making the announcement.

According to head coach Mike Shanahan, Cooley wants to be a starter but would not comment on whether Cooley requested to be released. Despite playing in five games last season as well as being placed on IR, Shanahan stated that Cooley is healthy and is capable of undertaking future opportunities in the NFL.

The coach was appreciative of the 30-year-old’s service and stated that he was a member of the team that he heavily relied on when he first came to Washington.
