Ryan Tannehill A Contender In The Dolphins Quarterback Battle?

Miami Dolphins rookie quarterback Ryan Tannehill could be changing the dynamics of the three-way quarterback competition in South Beach. In practice this week, Mike Sherman's former pupil from Texas A&M was working with the first team and giving his coaches something to think about, said the Miami Herald.

Asked about Tannehill’s chances of winning the starting job, head coach Joe Philbin had this to say:

“I think it’s on an as-earned basis. He’s throwing the ball well enough in the couple of days he’s been at practice. It’s been earned.”

The Dolphins’ first-round pick liked his chances as well, telling the press:

“I think I’ve gotten better every practice. ... I want to be the guy. It’s not a goal to be a backup. I want to play; I want to get in there.”

Matt Moore and David Garrard, a free agent addition this spring, were tabbed as the top two options in minicamp and OTAs during the offseason. The Dolphins' brass even made it clear that they were expecting one of those two to be their Week 1 starter.

Garrard is expected to win the top job, says the Palm Beach Post. Preseason play could change that, and Tannehill is expected to see plenty of work in those four games, which could push the decision further down to the wire than the Dolphins probably imagined.
