Redskins Vs. Saints, Week 1: New Orleans Defense, Rushing Game Struggles In Loss

The New Orleans Saints did not appear ready in Week 1, getting torched by Robert Griffin III and the upstart Washington Redskins in a game they would lose 40-32. There were a few positives to take away from the game, but anyone who saw the action would tell you it was a disappointing performance from the Saints.

SB Nation’s Saints blog, Canal Street Chronicles, took a look at some telling numbers from Sunday’s game. Here are a few that really stood out.

52 - Pass attempts by Drew Brees. That's a lot.

1 - Saints defensive sacks. There should have been much more pressure on a rookie quarterback making his NFL debut.

10 - 32 - Rushing attempts and net yards rushing. It's hard to run the ball when you're playing from behind the entire game and putting yourself in long yardage situations thanks to penalties.

42 - Rushing yards by Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III. Ten more than the entire Saints team combined.

New Orleans was not at full strength against the Redskins and it is still very early in the season, but changes are going to be necessary if the team hopes to compete in a tough division.
