Jets Vs. Steelers, Week 2: Pittsburgh Defense Stuffs Jets Offense

Needing a rebound from a Week 1 loss, the Pittsburgh Steelers showed their usual physical selves in a 27-10 victory over the New York Jets Sunday at Heinz Field. The Steelers jumped on the back of quarterback Ben Roethlisberger to improve to 1-1 on the season, a record held by over half of the NFL teams entering Week 3.

The Steelers trailed 10-6 in the second quarter after a 38-yard field goal by Jets' kicker Nick Folk, but from there it was all Pittsburgh, which scored 21-unanswered points, 14 in the second half, to pull out the victory in the home opener.

Though, the Steelers offense showed up in bunches it was the return of the defense that got the SB Nation blog Behind the Steel Curtain fired up:

While splash plays weren't coming easily - Pittsburgh had three sacks and one turnover in the game - brutal efficiency against the pass in particular stifled the confused-looking Jets.

New York didn't catch a pass in the entire second quarter, and quarterback Mark Sanchez was 3-for-16 passing over the last three quarters of the game.

The Steelers run defense was average, but Pittsburgh made up for it in other ways.

The Jets rushed for 90 yards on 22 carries (4.1 yards per carry), but the suffocating pass defense - which looked to be moving in the opposite direction than where it finished last week - helped hold the Jets to just 120 yards on their final eight drives of the game.

Oddly, Sanchez was 10-for-27 in the 27-10 loss with 138 yards and a touchdown pass to Santonio Holmes.
