David Akers to remain 49ers kicker vs. Packers

After a six-day competition with newly signed kicker Billy Cundiff, Jim Harbaugh has decided to stick with David Akers as his kicker in the team’s upcoming playoff game against the Packers.

While likely being one of the least thought about players on a football team, there's no denying that a kicker is one of the most important pieces to any winning program, especially in the playoffs, when a single point means the difference between keeping a Super Bowl dream alive and going home. That's why some may find it surprising that 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh has decided that he's going to stick with David Akers for the Niners' upcoming playoff game against the Packers on Saturday night, despite bringing in Billy Cundiff for a six-day competition with Akers.

Akers made 29 of 42 field goals during the season, and he especially struggled in field goals ranging from 40-49 yards.

When Harbaugh was asked about the decision to stick with Akers instead of going with Cundiff, he said that Akers gives the team the best chance to win.

When asked how Akers handled the competition, Harbaugh said, “Good. (He) responded like a football player does.”

“He gives us the best chance,” explained Harbaugh.

Akers missed two kicks in the team’s regular-season finale in his home stadium and was booed by the crowd. Both Akers and Cundiff will be on the 53-man roster, but only Akers will dress for the game.
