Mike McCoy was formally introduced as the newest head coach of the San Diego Chargers on Wednesday, replacing the recently-fired Norv Turner.
Chargers formally introduce Mike McCoy as head coach
The San Diego Chargers held a press conference on Tuesday, formally introducing Mike McCoy as the team’s next head coach.
San Diego president and CEO Dean Spanos introduced McCoy at the press conference, calling McCoy the “right man” for the job. Spanos lauded McCoy’s qualities, saying that McCoy has an “innovative mind for building offenses,” and that he has a “structured vision on how to build and coach a team.”
McCoy told the media that he knew minutes into his interview with San Diego that the Chargers were the right place for him. San Diego’s foundation, McCoy stated, set it apart from other teams, saying that the “foundation is in place to build a winner for a long time.”
Though expectations have been tempered recently, and former head coach Norv Turner told Chargers fans to be patient with San Diego’s new head coach, McCoy said that he has one goal every year -- to “be the last team standing with the trophy.”
McCoy didn’t mention names, but did state that he will hire an offensive coordinator, and that the offensive coordinator will call the plays for the Chargers.
Over the last three seasons, McCoy has had the opportunity to work with Kyle Orton, Tim Tebow and Peyton Manning. McCoy developed an offense that Tebow thrived in, leading the Broncos to the playoffs in 2011 -- something that few expected to happen. McCoy said that he is "very excited" to work with Philip Rivers, and by Week 1, the Chargers will have a "great system" in place.
McCoy most recently served as the Denver Broncos' offensive coordinator, holding that position between 2009-2012. Under McCoy, Denver's offense morphed multiple times, with different offenses for Orton, Tebow and Manning.
