Chip Kelly deemed ‘too risky’ by Browns GM Joe Banner

The Browns didn’t want to take a gamble by hiring Chip Kelly. Here’s what their CEO had to say about the Eagles new coach.

At one point in their search for a new head coach, the Browns appeared to be seriously considering Chip Kelly to fill that void heading into the 2013 season. Now their new CEO wants everyone to know they felt Kelly was too risky to bring in.

Joe Banner told Sports Illustrated’s Peter King that Kelly would have been a gamble to hire, leaving Cleveland wary of his potential. Banner noted the fact that Kelly was uncertain of making a move to the NFL, along with the fact that he backed out of coaching for Tampa Bay last year.

The Browns were the first team to speak with Kelly about moving up to the pros this season. Both sides met in Arizona back on Jan. 4, where a lengthy interview was held, but sources said Cleveland did not feel he was completely committed to leaving Oregon.

Despite saying he was staying with the Ducks, Kelly took the head coaching job with the Eagles this past week. Hiring any coach out of college is a gamble, but Philadelphia was willing to roll the dice.
