The Philadelphia Eagles are still in the hunt for a new defensive coordinator to add to Chip Kelly’s coaching staff, and they appear to be picking up the pace in their search. Browns linebackers coach Billy Davis and Ravens linebackers coach Ted Monachino are the latest candidates for the position.

Davis interviewed with the Eagles on Sunday, per Adam Schefter. He has served as the defensive coordinator with two NFL franchises throughout his lengthy career. He ran the San Francisco 49ers defense from 2005-2006 and later operated as the Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator from 2009-2010.

Monachino is also in the mix, according to several sources. He was hired as Baltimore’s linebackers coach in 2010 and is currently preparing for the biggest stage in football. He’s never held the title of defensive coordinator, but many consider him a rising star in the coaching world. Linebacker Terrell Suggs credits Monachino for helping him get to the NFL after coaching him at Arizona State.

With all the rumors surrounding the Eagles’ coaching search, one consistent aspect discussed has been the implementation of a 3-4 defense. Davis was hired by Mike Nolan in San Francisco for his expertise in this area, so it’s easy to see why Philadelphia is giving him a look. Baltimore currently runs a 3-4 base as well.

A switch to the 3-4 defense would take some time for the Eagles to assemble the proper personnel, but that appears to be the way they’re heading. Giants linebackers coach Jim Herrmann recently withdrew his name from consideration, while UGA’s Todd Grantham and Alabama’s Kirby Smart continue to be mentioned around the rumor mill.
