Jets trade rumors: Antonio Cromartie on the block?

The New York Jets are desperate for salary cap relief, something that Antonio Cromartie being dealt could start to provide.

Maybe everyone has been talking about trading the wrong corner.

Over at ESPN.com, the question is raised if perhaps the New York Jets are better off keeping Darrelle Revis and working out a new deal while trading Antonio Cromartie.

Cromartie was one of the Jets’ brightest stars in 2012 (for what that’s worth) and could command at a draft pick or two. While he would never bring in the haul that Revis would, Cromartie could still require some value while clearing $9 million off the books.

If Gang Green wants to make this move, they need to execute it by March 15th, the day Cromartie’s bonus of $2.3 million kicks in.

It won’t be easy to deal Cromartie for anything better than a third-round pick, possibly a second, mostly because of his age and his reputation of being a “me” player.

Cromartie will be 29 years old at the beginning of training camp. While that isn’t old, it’s certainly starting to get toward the average decline age of a cornerback.
