Jaguars to hire David Caldwell as general manager

David Caldwell is starting off the new year with a new job, as he is expected to become the general manager in Jacksonville.

The Jacksonville Jaguars are set to hire David Caldwell to be their new general manager. The two sides are working out a contract, according to a report from Jay Glazer of Fox Sports.

Caldwell, the former vice president of player personnel for the Atlanta Falcons, comes to Jacksonville with quite a project on his hands. The Jaguars went 2-14 in 2012, tying the Kansas City Chiefs for the worst record in the league.

Caldwell does have some good news with Jacksonville, though. The franchise has plenty of cap space and a new owner in Shad Khan who is looking to raise the profile of the organization. They also have the No. 2 overall pick, something that can be used to quickly nab an impact player without having to worry if he wants to come to Jacksonville.

It will be interesting to see what Caldwell does with Mike Mularkey. He could decide to give Mularkey another chance or just move on and bring in his own hire.

Caldwell has a successful past in helping to find top talent. He worked under Bill Polian as a scout in Indianapolis, helping the Colts win Super Bowl XLI.
