Eagles coaching rumors: Lovie Smith to interview Thursday

The Philadelphia Eagles will interview former Chicago Bears head coach Lovie Smith on Thursday as they continue to search for Andy Reid’s replacement.

Lovie Smith will interview for the Philadelphia Eagles head coaching vacancy on Thursday. With Chip Kelly having decided to remain at Oregon, the Eagles search remains wide open as they look to replace Andy Reid.

Smith spent the last nine seasons as the coach of the Chicago Bears, leading them to a 81-63 record during his time in Chicago. Smith was fired after the Bears finished 10-6 and failed to make the playoffs following a 7-1 start this season. In nine years in Chicago, Smith lead the Bears to the playoffs three times and to a Super Bowl appearance after the 2006 season.

He is known as a defensive specialist and his Bears teams always had a knack for forcing turnovers, something the Eagles struggled to do in 2012. Last season the Eagles only forced 13 turnovers, tied for worst in the league, while Chicago forced a league-best 44.

The Eagles have interviewed Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy, Falcons defensive coordinator Mike Nolan special teams coordinator Keith Armstrong in addition to Kelly. They have interviews scheduled with Smith, Colts offensive coordinator Bruce Arians, Seahawks defensive coordinator Gus Bradley, and Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden.
