Bills hire Nathaniel Hackett from Syracuse

The Buffalo Bills have hired Nathaniel Hackett from Syracuse to be their offensive coordinator, according to reports.

The Buffalo Bills have made their offensive coordinator hire, bringing in Nathaniel Hackett, according to Tim Graham of the Buffalo News on Twitter.

Hackett joins Doug Marrone, who recently took over the vacant head coaching position with the Bills. Marrone is also coming from Syracuse, where he was the head coach above Hackett.

Hackett’s status with Syracuse was up in the air, as the school promoted defensive coordinator Scott Shafer to the head coaching position. Initial reports suggested that Hackett would remain as offensive coordinator for continuity, but the lure of the NFL was too much.

With Syracuse, Hackett was the team’s primary play caller and led the Orange to one of the best offenses in school history. Now with he and Marrone gone, the team has a defensive-minded coach and the offensive side of the ball will have to be rebuilt with continuity gone.

Hackett will have his work cut out for him in Buffalo. It will all start with Ryan Fitzpatrick and the quarterback position. Under Fitzpatrick, the Bills had the No. 25 passing offense in the league. Fortunately for Hackett, he'll have the NFL's sixth-best rushing offense to work with, so it's not exactly starting from nothing.
