Chargers coaching rumors: Jim Mora reportedly contacted by San Diego

The San Diego Chargers have reportedly contacted Jim Mora about their head coaching vacancy.

USA TODAY Sports

The San Diego Chargers have contacted UCLA football coach Jim Mora for their vacant head coaching position, according to Chris Foster of the L.A. Times. According to the report, Mora is likely to remain with the Bruins, but not much is known about the details of whether the Chargers got anywhere with him.

Mora has NFL coaching experience, as he spent three seasons as the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons, and one season as the man in charge of the Seattle Seahawks. He also spent time with the Chargers, beginning his coaching career as an assistant with the Chargers in 1985.

He led the Bruins to a 9-5 record in his first season in charge, and the school is dedicating a lot of resources to improving the pay of his assistants and providing new team facilities this offseason.

That could make it much more attractive for Mora, who would also have to pay back some money if he were to break his five-year contract this year, according to the Times. He’s set to make $11.235 million over the course of his contract, but would have to pay $3 million if he terminates his contract before Jan. 16, or $2.5 million if he left in the following year.
