The New York Jets signed wide receiver/kick returner Josh Cribbs on Tuesday, according to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports. New York took a long look at Cribbs several times this season, and finally decided to pull the trigger on the return specialist.

The New York Jets reportedly signed wide receiver/kick returner Josh Cribbs on Tuesday.

Cribbs is one of the better return men in the game, or at least he has been over the last several years. He has 11 kick return touchdowns over the course of his career, with eight coming on kickoffs and three coming on punt returns. His best season catching the football came in 2011, when he managed 41 catches for 518 yards and four touchdowns.
Unfortunately, Cribbs has been banged up in recent seasons. He has been trying to prove to teams that he is finally healthy, and given that he was signed by the Jets, it seems likely that they are convinced of this. Clyde Gates is the current return man for the Jets, and though he has been solid in recent weeks, he is banged up himself, so an immediate opening for Cribbs is certainly possible.
On offense, the Jets need help at receiver and suffer from a general lack of speed. Running back Mike Goodson gave them that speed when he came off a suspension, but recently went down for the season with an injury. Cribbs has been used as a receiver and out of the backfield on offense in the past, so he could certainly work his way into the lineup there as well.
