David Amerson injury: Redskins CB expected to clear NFL concussion protocol

David Amerson is still going through the NFL’s concussion protocol, but he is expected to be cleared in time to play in Week 7.

Washington Redskins cornerback David Amerson hopes to clear the NFL's concussion protocol in time to suit up for the team's bout against the Chicago Bears this Sunday. So far so good, with head coach Mike Shanahan indicating Thursday that the rookie cornerback has passed all of his tests so far.

“He did some drill work,” Shanahan said. “No contact. He passed his tests. He’ll be tested every day and go through the protocol, and if he passes his tests each day, he should be ready to go.”

Protocol indicates that players cannot return as full participants in practice until Friday after suffering a concussion during the previous week’s game. If Amerson passes his tests again, he should practice fully and put himself on target to play in Week 7. A decision won’t be made on Amerson’s availability until after Friday’s practice, but according to him, “everything’s looking good.”

Amerson suffered the concussion on a helmet-to-helmet collision with Dallas Cowboys outside linebacker Cameron Lawrence on a kickoff during Sunday's loss. Lawrence was fined $21,000 for the hit.

Amerson is having a good rookie season in a bad secondary this season. He has four passes defended and an interception returned for a touchdown through five games played.
