Case Keenum keeping Texans competitive vs. Chiefs

Case Keenum has been surprisingly competent in his NFL debut against the Chiefs this week.

The Houston Texans raised eyebrows across the league when they named Case Keenum the starting quarterback against the Kansas City Chiefs. Most people predicted disaster for an undrafted free agent who has never even been active for an NFL game until this week, but Keenum is keeping things close in a competitive game.

At the end of the third quarter, Keenum has completed 12-of-19 passes for 229 yards and a touchdown as the Texans trail the Chiefs by just one possession. More importantly, he has thrown zero interceptions, a problem that has plagued previous starters Matt Schaub and T.J. Yates. He has done a fine job evading pressure and keeping mistakes down -- the Chiefs have gotten just one sack on Keenum a week after taking down Terrelle Pryor 10 times.

Keenum was already popular among hometown Texans fans after setting college records at the University of Houston. If he’s able to pull off the upset win today, it will be that much harder for the coaches to re-install Schaub as the starter.
