Texans vs. Chiefs 2013: KC start beyond ‘wildest dreams’

Kansas City is the only undefeated team in the NFL after beating Houston on Sunday.

The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Houston Texans 17-16 on Sunday afternoon at Arrowhead Stadium, running their record to 7-0.

Following the Denver Broncos' 39-30 loss to the Indianapolis Colts, the Chiefs are the only team with a bagel in the loss column, only one year after being the worst team in the NFL with a 2-14 mark. However, Kansas City was certainly tested by a very injury-ravaged Texans squad.

Alex Smith had his best game in weeks, despite throwing an interception and going without a touchdown for the third straight game. Smith threw for 240 yards and completed 23 of 34 passes in typical game-manager style. Jamaal Charles had a nice day as usual, scoring once and finishing with 123 total yards.

Joel Thorman of Arrowhead Pride showcased his total disbelief after looking at the AFC West standings:

I can’t believe that. Just can’t believe it. Not in my wildest dreams would I have expected this kind of start. Shoot, there was some debate before the season as to whether 4-3 was realistic.

Third-string quarterback Case Keenum got his first NFL start on Sunday and threw for 271 yards and a touchdown against the best defense in the league. Houston had to play without Arian Foster (after its first possession), Owen Daniels and Matt Schaub and still almost pulled it out.

Over at Battle Red Blog, the talk centers around who should be the quarterback coming out of the Texans’ bye:

At 2-5, it's not looking great for the Texans. It will be interesting to see if Houston comes out of the bye starting Matt Schaub or giving Keenum the keys to the car for the rest of the season. With a lost season, Keenum probably should be the way to go. What does Gary Kubiak have to lose, right?

Kansas City now plays host to the Cleveland Browns while Houston licks its wounds during a bye week.
