Broncos vs. Colts 2013: Denver ‘undisciplined’ in loss

Only one team remains undefeated after Indianapolis pulled off the upset in a certain someone’s return.

Andy Lyons

The Indianapolis Colts defeated the Denver Broncos, 39-33, at Lucas Oil Stadium on Sunday night in one of the most anticipated regular games in league history.

Peyton Manning returned to Indianapolis for the first time since signing with the Denver Broncos, a place where he was drafted in 1998 and subsequently became one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time, winning four MVP awards and a Super Bowl in 2006.

Manning played well, throwing for 386 yards and three touchdowns despite being under duress all night from Robert Mathis, who now leads the league with 11.5 sacks after getting Manning twice.

Denver also hurt itself repeatedly, taking 12 penalties for 103 yards, including four personal fouls.

Over at Stampede Blue, Brad Wells wrote about Andrew Luck, who had a very productive game for Indianapolis:

Colts quarterback Andrew Luck, who replaced Manning after he was released in March of 2012, accounted for four Colts touchdowns; three through the air and one rushing. Luck was 21-38 for 228 yards and 3 touchdowns, and rushed for a fourth.

For Denver, it is the first loss in the regular season in 19 games. In the AFC West, the Broncos, at 6-1, are sitting one game behind the Kansas City Chiefs, a team they face twice in three weeks starting on Nov. 17.

Kyle Montgomery of Mile High Report discussed some of the problems that sunk the team on Sunday:

Manning was impressive to close the game, but it came too late, as an inconsistent showing from the NFL's leading passer was too much for an undisciplined team to overcome. Colts defenders swarmed Manning throughout the game - his former teammate Robert Mathis sacked him twice - while Broncos defensive tackle Kevin Vickerson was flagged three times for personal foul penalties that cost the Broncos 45 yards in penalties.
