Brian Cushing faces 3-month recovery for broken fibula, torn LCL

The Texans’ season has gone from bad to worse, with linebacker Brian Cushing out three months with the broken leg and torn LCL he suffered Sunday.

Brian Cushing is on a three-month recovery timetable from a broken fibula and torn LCL in his left leg suffered during the Houston Texans' loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports. Cushing had to be carted into the locker room after taking a shot to the knees on a low block.

The timetable would put Cushing on track to return to the Texans this season if the team were to make a deep postseason run, but at 2-5 the team’s playoff chances are slim at best. More likely, Cushing has suffered a season-ending injury for the second year in a row. He appeared in just five games in 2012 before being sidelined by a torn ACL, also caused by a low block to his left knee.

Despite the Texans’ struggles, Cushing was in the midst of a solid season. He had 44 tackles through the first six games of the season, which put him on track for 117 on the year, the most he would have had since his rookie season. He also had 1.5 sacks, a forced fumble and an interception return for a touchdown.

In place of Cushing the Texans may have to turn to Justin Tuggle, an undrafted rookie out of Kansas State. Tuggle has appeared in five games this season, and has five tackles.
