Aldon Smith’s rehab will be considered by Roger Goodell in any league discipline

The NFL is still deciding on a punishment for Aldon Smith, including a possible suspension, but his decision to enter rehab could be a factor in his favor.

The NFL has not settled on a punishment for San Francisco 49ers defensive lineman Aldon Smith yet, but his choice to enter rehab will factor into their decision.

Speaking to reporters in England, commissioner Roger Goodell confirmed that Smith's treatment will be a factor when the league decides whether or not to suspend him. The 49ers traveled to London this week to play the Jacksonville Jaguars, and it will be fifth game in a row Smith will miss. He has been excused from the team after being arrested on DUI charges, but the 49ers are hopeful that Smith will return this season.

Commissioner Goodell has hinted that Smith will face no further punishment if he continues his encouraging progress. Via ESPN:

“Certainly, the issue here isn’t to discipline players. It’s to stop the behavior,” Goodell said. “Aldon has voluntarily said, ‘I need help.’

“We’re obviously there to support him, and the 49ers did a great job getting him into a facility to try to get help. We support that.”

Smith could either face a reduced suspension, fine or no further discipline, depending on how satisfied the NFL is with his rehab treatment. He played for the 49ers two days after his latest arrest, but was shortly allowed to leave the team to enter rehab.
