Chip Kelly doesn’t expect Michael Vick to play in Week 9

Chip Kelly doesn’t expect Michael Vick to play against the Raiders, which would give Matt Barkley the start in Week 9 if Nick Foles isn’t healthy enough to return.

Michael Vick likely won't be suiting up when the Philadelphia Eagles play the Oakland Raiders in Week 9, Chip Kelly said Monday morning according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. Vick aggravated his hamstring during the Eagles' loss to the New York Giants on Sunday. He left during the second quarter and did not return to the game.

Vick said he heard a pop in his hamstring on a first quarter scramble. He returned for a series before giving way to Matt Barkley. Vick missed the Eagles’ prior two games with a hamstring injury he suffered in Week 5.

If Vick sits out again in Week 9, it's unclear who will start behind center for the Eagles. Barkley struggled against the Giants, but with Nick Foles still recovering from a Week 7 concussion, the Eagles may have no choice but to turn to the rookie yet again.

Kelly again:

“Matt is healthy, so that’s a positive,” Kelly said. “I would think Mike would not be ready to go, and it depends on where Nick is. So we’ll know early in the week which two guys we got to prepare for, one and two. Our first day of practice is [Tuesday]. We’ll have a good understanding today. I know Nick will come in today and meet with [trainer] Chris Peduzzi and our doctors, and we’ll have a good understanding of where Nick is this week and what’s his availability.”

Kelly has managed to avoid a true quarterback controversy this season, mostly because Vick and Foles have rarely been healthy at the same time, making Kelly’s decision easy. It remains to be seen what Kelly does when both players are close to 100 percent. Both Vick and Foles have been marred by inconsistency this season, weaving brilliant performances with duds.
