Christian Ponder, Josh Freeman vie for Vikings starting QB

Minnesota is desperate for better quarterback play, and has not figured out where to look next.

Hannah Foslien

The Minnesota Vikings are having a quarterback competition between Josh Freeman and Christian Ponder, according to NFL.com.

Head coach Leslie Frazier would not commit to anybody before Sunday's game against the Dallas Cowboys, per the report:

"I don't want to discount Matt, but Christian (Ponder) did some good things (against the Packers)," Frazier said about Cassel not being in the mix to start against Dallas, per the St. Paul Pioneer Press. "There were some things he could obviously do better, but that has something to do with it. (Ponder) has led us to some wins in the past. Josh (Freeman), we brought him here to evaluate him and determine whether he could be a guy that could be a potential player for us in the future. That's what goes into trying to evaluate the both of them."

This is nothing new for the Vikings this season, who have used three different starters in the span of seven games. Ponder came into the campaign as the man, but quickly lost his hold on the job after a rib injury that let Matt Cassel start twice. When Ponder was healthy, the team decided to bench both he and Cassel in favor of the newly acquired Freeman.

Problem is, Freeman was brutal in his debut against the then-winless New York Giants, completing 20 of 53 passes for 190 yards and an interception. Freeman also suffered a concussion in the loss, giving Ponder his job back last Sunday versus the Green Bay Packers. Ponder was decent, completing 14 of 21 for 145 yards and no interceptions.
