Tank Carradine injury: 49ers activate DL from reserve list

Recovered from his torn ACL, Tank Carradine was activated to San Francisco’s 53-man roster on Tuesday.

Recovered from an ACL injury he suffered during his senior season in college, Tank Carradine was activated from the non-football injury reserve list on Tuesday. He joins San Francisco's active 53-man roster and will be eligible to play next week when the 49ers return from their bye week.

Carradine tore his ACL late in his senior season at Florida State. The injury caused his draft stock to slide and instead of being selected in the mid-to-early first round as many predicted before the draft, Carradine slide to the top of the second round. San Francisco drafted him with the No. 40 pick and stashed him on the reserve list, giving him time to fully recover.

He was eligible to return after Week 6 and began practicing with the team. San Francisco had three weeks to activate him, and did so early by making the move during the bye week. At 6’4 and 273 pounds, Carradine will likely play either outside spot along San Francisco’s 3-4 defensive front. He may bring some added pass rush with his return. Carradine recorded 11 sacks in 11 games last season before injuring his knee. He has a rare combination of size and speed and reportedly ran the 40-yard dash in 4.75 seconds at his pro day, despite still being less than 100 percent.

To make room on the active roster, San Francisco released linebacker Jermaine Cunningham.
