Ryan Mathews injury: Concussion forces Chargers RB to leave Raiders game

San Diego lost the game and its running back during Sunday’s contest.

Denny Medley-US PRESSWIRE

San Diego Chargers running back Ryan Mathews left Sunday night's game against the Oakland Raiders in the second quarter with a concussion and did not return, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.

The injury comes at a bad time for the former first-round pick out of Fresno State when considering the level of play of backup Danny Woodhead. Mathews has struggled this season to find his footing, gaining only 3.5 yards per carry. Woodhead is only picking up 3.7 yards per attempt, but he has already caught 31 balls out of the backfield for 220 yards while racking up three touchdowns.

To this point in his career, it would be fair to label Mathews at least a partial bust. Now in his fourth season, Mathews has rushed for 1,000 yards only once and is yet to play 16 games in a season. His best year came in 2011, when he rushed for 1,091 yards and caught 50 passe for another 451 yards while scoring six touchdowns.
