Carolina Panthers release Armanti Edwards, per report

The Panthers finally cut ties with Edwards, waiving the receiver after three unproductive seasons.

Bob Donnan-US PRESSWIRE

The Carolina Panthers have released wide receiver Armanti Edwards, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

The move ends an ill-fated experiment by former GM Marty Hurney. Edwards played quarterback at Appalachian State, leading the Mountaineers to their legendary upset over Michigan in 2007 and winning two FCS titles in a row. The Panthers selected Edwards No. 89 overall in the 2010 Draft, trading their 2011 second-round pick to the New England Patriots to acquire him.

Carolina intended to convert Edwards to a wide receiver, but the transition never stuck. In three seasons with the team, he recorded a grand total of five catches, 121 yards and no touchdowns. The draft-day trade was one of many mistakes that led to Hurney’s dismissal in the middle of the 2012 season.

James Dator of Cat Scratch Reader isn’t too upset at the release, but he does feel bad for Edwards being stuck in a bad situation and thinks a move back to quarterback in the CFL might be the best for him:

The release is disappointing news for Edwards and Appalachian State fans, but it may give him an opportunity to find a place as a quarterback -- though that seems like a long shot. His best move would be to try to re-establish himself in the CFL, and see if he could back-door his way into the league.
