Rams vs. Colts 2013: Tavon Austin has ‘breakout performance’ in win

St. Louis pulled off a large upset with a blowout of Indianapolis.

The St. Louis Rams shocked the football world on Sunday afternoon, crushing the Indianapolis Colts 38-8 at Lucas Oil Stadium.

St. Louis came into the game 3-6 and with backup quarterback Kellen Clemens at the helm. Riding a three-game losing streak, the Rams jumped out to a 38-0 lead on the back of Clemens and rookie wide receiver Tavon Austin, who had the best game of his young career.

Austin caught only two passes, but amassed 138 yards and scored on both receptions, going for 57 and 81 yards respectively. The speedster also had a 98-yard punt return for a touchdown, giving him a trio of scores for the day.

Over at Turf Show Times, Tyler Bishop wrote about Austin’s breakout performance:

Tavon Austin lived up to his triple threat status in the Rams' blowout of the Indianapolis Colts. Austin returned kicks and punts, took carries out of the backfield, and caught several balls that he swiftly jettisoned into the end-zone. Yes, if you were patiently waiting for a breakout performance, today was that day. If you were not so patiently waiting, hopefully this is your wake-up call.

For the Colts, this could not have been a more embarrassing day. Indianapolis dropped to 6-3 after having a nice comeback win the previous week over the Houston Texans. Now, the Colts need to move on quickly, as they play Thursday against the Tennessee Titans. Brad Wells of Stampede Blue puts the blame on coach Chuck Pagano:

For, at least, the fifth time this season, the Colts looked unprepared, unfocused, and simply not ready to face their opponent at kickoff on Sunday. Both myself and Josh Wilson have been critical of head coach Chuck Pagano on this very topic.More from SB Nation NFL
