Wes Welker injury: Concussion could keep Broncos WR out vs. Patriots

Denver’s slot receiver might be out when the Broncos visit his former team.

Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

Denver Broncos wide receiver Wes Welker sustained a concussion in the fourth quarter on Sunday night against the Kansas City Chiefs, according to Mike Freeman.

With the diagnosis of a concussion comes a litany of steps that Welker must go through this week before being cleared to play against the New England Patriots, his former team. The NFL has a battery of tests that need to be taken in order for a player to return, safeguarding him from any further concussion while still experiencing symptoms.

Welker has been very valuable to the Broncos offense this season, catching 61 passes for 648 yards and nine touchdowns. Without him, the Denver attack will rely more on wideouts Demaryius Thomas and Eric Decker, along with tight end Julius Thomas and running back Knowshon Moreno.

If Welker can’t go, it would certainly take out one of the main storylines heading into next Sunday night’s tilt. Welker played six seasons with the Patriots and had over 100 catches in five of them. The former New England star played in two Super Bowls during his tenure there before leaving for Denver and a two-year, $12 million contract this offseason.
