Smith played poorly against the Buffalo Bills and Baltimore Ravens, throwing for a total of 230 yards and five interceptions without a touchdown. He was pulled against the Bills in Week 11, but had an opportunity to play the entireity of Sunday's game in a 19-3 loss to the Ravens.

Matt Simms was signed as an undrafted free agent and played well in limited time. His short-term success prompted some to wonder if a quarterback switch was imminent, but the Jets front office is showing patience with Smith.
Initially it was expected Mark Sanchez would start the season, with Smith being developed slowly. However a shoulder injury to Sanchez thrust the rookie into a starting role, where he's had limited success. In 11 starts he's thrown for 2,227 yards while adding eight touchdowns and an NFL-high 18 interceptions.
