Kevin Vickerson injury: Broncos DT could be out for season

With Vickerson going down, Denver is losing a big body inside to plug the run game and push the pocket.

Doug Pensinger

The Denver Broncos could be without defensive tackle Kevin Vickerson for the remainder of the season, according to Adam Schefter.

Vickerson injured his hip in the first half of Denver's 34-31 overtime loss to the New England Patriots last week, and while he does not need surgery his ailment will require he miss at least six weeks. At the earliest, Vickerson might be able to return in the playoffs.

This is a blow to Denver's defense which already struggles to stop opposing offenses. The unit has been better since Von Miller's return, but then allowed 31 points in the second half against Tom Brady and co.

On the season, Vickerson has 22 tackles and a sack. In his seventh NFL campaign and fourth with the Broncos, Vickerson has proven to be a solid run-stuffer at 330 pounds. He will be replaced by Mitch Unrein, a third-year veteran out of Wyoming who has 12 tackles this season in a reserve role.
