49ers release Nnamdi Asomugha, activate Eric Wright, Mario Manningham

Nnamdi Asomugha’s career in San Francisco ended after eight games.

Update: The team made the three moves official.

San Francisco is planning to activate Eric Wright this week and to make room on the active roster, the 49ers will release Nnamdi Asomugha, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

When San Francisco signed Asomugha, it was viewed as a low-risk move with the potential for a high reward. Asomugha, however, failed to regain the form he displayed earlier in his career and was near the bottom of San Francisco's depth chart. He started the year as the 49ers' nickel cornerback before suffering a knee injury. Tramaine Brock stepped into the role and excelled, taking over the job even when Asomugha returned. Asomugha played in just three games this season and was inactive -- despite being healthy -- the last three weeks.

The 49ers traded for Wright during the offseason, only to have the deal fall through after Wright failed his physical. He eventually signed with San Francisco after being released. The 49ers placed him on the active/non-football injury list. He began practicing with the team in late October and had to be activated by Tuesday due to NFL rules. The 28-year-old will take Asomugha’s spot on the roster and could compete for playing time in sub packages.

According to the report from Rapoport, the 49ers could also activate wide receiver Mario Manningham soon. The wide receiver returned to practice after beginning the season on the physically unable to perform list.
