E.J. Manuel injury: ‘Barring any setbacks,’ rookie QB will start, says Doug Marrone

The rookie signal caller is poised to make his first start since spraining his LCL in early October.

Rookie quarterback E.J. Manuel is expected to return from injury and start for the Buffalo Bills this weekend as they take on the Pittsburgh Steelers, the team has announced.

UPDATE: On Friday, the Bills officially announced Manuel as the starter against the Steelers.

Manuel was a full participant in practice on Thursday, and will be under center on Sunday, barring a setback.

Matt Ufford offers you fantasy advice on Aaron Rodgers, finding a sub for Jamaal Charles and more.

“EJ coming back today wasn’t sore or anything and that’s what we were waiting for,” said head coach Doug Marrone. “He took the majority of snaps in practice so barring any setbacks I’m planning on him going.”

The rookie signal caller, who the Bills selected with the 16th overall pick in the 2013 draft, sprained his LCL in a Thursday night loss to the Cleveland Browns on Oct. 3 and has not played since.

Thad Lewis played decently after taking over in Week 6, throwing three touchdowns and two interceptions in a three-game span which saw the team go 1-2. Lewis himself was injured in Week 8 against the Saints, forcing undrafted rookie Jeff Tuel into the starting spot against the unbeaten Chiefs last Sunday. Tuel threw for 229 yards, one touchdown and a pair of picks in the loss.

Manuel got off to a respectable start this season, throwing for 985 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions in his first five games. The team started 2-3 with him under center.
