Wes Welker injury: Broncos WR ruled out for Thursday

After suffering his second concussion in four weeks, Welker will sit out against the Chargers.

Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

Denver Broncos wide receiver Wes Welker will not play on Thursday night against the San Diego Chargers after sustaining a concussion on Sunday, per Jay Glazer.

Welker is having one of the best seasons of his career, but will now miss a game for the first time this season. The dynamic slot receiver suffered a concussion on Nov. 17 versus the Kansas City Chiefs but did not miss any time, coming back immediately to play the New England Patriots.

This season, Welker has already amassed 73 catches for 778 yards and 10 touchdowns, one of three Denver receivers with double-digit scores.

The Broncos may choose to be very careful with Welker for the remainder of the regular season. Denver will lock up the AFC West with two more wins, and considering it plays the Chargers, Houston Texans and Oakland Raiders, that appears a foregone conclusion. With three wins, they would clinch home field advantage.
