LB Sam Montgomery signed by Raiders

Oakland has added a rookie linebacker who has talent but some maturity issues.

USA TODAY Sports

The Oakland Raiders have signed linebacker/defensive end Sam Montgomery, according to Ian Rapoport.

Montgomery was a third-round pick by the Houston Texans last April but was released for disciplinary reasons. The former LSU Tigers star has never seen the field in an NFL game, being cut before he could make an impact.

Over at Silver and Black Pride, Levi Damien explains why the Raiders decided to take a chance on Montgomery with only a few weeks left in the season:

The Raiders are desperate for some help, any help, at the defensive end position. With just two games left in the season, it makes sense to give Montgomery a look to see if he can provide some much needed pass rush.

At LSU, Montgomery was a first-team All-America selection in 2011 as a sophomore before watching his production begin to decline. Along with Barkevious Mingo, Montgomery formed a fierce pass rush that led the Tigers to a BCS Championship game in 2012, where they lost to the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Oakland ranks 24th against the pass, a major problem for any team but especially one with Peyton Manning and Philip Rivers in the division.
