Texans interview Lovie Smith for head coach, according to report

Smith reportedly sat down with Texans execs on Monday.

Starting with the press conference to announce Gary Kubiak's firing, Lovie Smith's name has been bouncing around as a candidate for the next head coach of the Houston Texans. That possibility became even more realistic with the news that Smith reportedly interviewed for the position on Monday, according to NFL.com's Ian Rapoport.

Texans owner Bob McNair has stated his desire to bring on someone with NFL coaching experience, something Smith has plenty of after spending nine years as the head coach of the Chicago Bears. He has spent the last year away from football after being fired by Chicago last season.

Smith, who had five winning seasons and three playoff appearances with Chicago, figures to be one of the most sought-after commodities in the league as more teams begin dumping coaches at the close of the season.

McNair has also said he will consider prospective coaches currently employed with other teams, though he noted NFL rules won’t allow him to contact those candidates until after the season.

Smith is the first official candidate interviewed by the Texans since Kubiak was fired on Dec. 6 following a shocking 2-11 start to the 2013 season.

Whoever takes over in Houston will walk into a well-stocked roster studded with aging yet impactful offensive playmakers in Arian Foster and Andre Johnson and perhaps the league's best defensive player in J.J. Watt. The Texans are also in line to earn the first overall pick in the upcoming NFL draft.
