Ravens will hire Gary Kubiak as offensive coordinator, per report
The Texans are expected to announce the hire on Monday afternoon.
UPDATE 1:29 p.m. ET: Albert Breer of NFL Media reports that the Baltimore Ravens will announce the hiring of Gary Kubiak as their next offensive coordinator at 3 p.m. ET on Monday.
UPDATE 2:15 p.m. ET: ESPN’s Adam Schefter says former Texans offensive coordinator Rick Dennison will join Kubiak in Baltimore as the Ravens’ quarterbacks coach.
Former Houston Texans head coach Gary Kubiak appears to be the frontrunner for the Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator job, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Kubiak spent the last eight years as the lead man in Houston, guiding the franchise to its first pair of AFC South titles and two playoff victories. However, everything went sideways in 2013 when after starting 2-0, the Texans lost their final 14 games and Kubiak suffered a mini-stroke in a November game against the Indianapolis Colts.
Kubiak has plenty of experience as an offensive coordinator, having worked in that role before with the Denver Broncos between 1995-2005 under Mike Shanahan. Should Kubiak land the job in Baltimore, he will be taking over for Jim Caldwell, who left for the head coaching gig with the Detroit Lions.
There will be some work to do with the Ravens offense, which finished 29th in total offense in 2013. Joe Flacco had one of his worst seasons, completing only 59 percent of his passes while throwing 19 touchdowns against 22 interceptions. Ray Rice was also brutal, rushing for an average of 3.1 yards per carry to the tune of 660 yards.
Other candidates for the job include Kyle Shanahan and Jim Hostler, per NFL.com. Hostler is currently the Ravens' wide receivers coach and Shanahan had been working under his father as the offensive coordinator with the Washington Redskins. Ironically, Shanahan worked under Kubiak as the offensive coordinator in Houston from 2008-09.
