Texans rumors: Ken Whisenhunt is final interview candidate, per report

Bill O’Brien is widely considered to be the favorite for the Houston head coaching job.

The Houston Texans are in the midst of a coaching search, but it may be nearing a conclusion. San Diego Chargers offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt will be the final candidate interviewed by the team, Ian Rapoport is reporting.

A former NFL tight end, Whisenhunt began his career as a positional coach before being hired as the offensive coordinator for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2004. After helping lead the team to a victory in Super Bowl XL, Whisenhunt was hired as the head coach for the struggling Arizona Cardinals, with immediate success.

Hired in 2007, Whisenhunt posted an 8-8 record in his first season before two straight division titles -- their first two playoff appearances in a decade. The team made a surprise run to the Super Bowl in 2008 after posting a 9-7 regular season record, but lost to the Steelers in the game.

After two 5-11 records over the next three years, Whisenhunt was fired, and he was hired as the Chargers’ offensive coordinator prior to this season. San Diego is 8-7 with an outside shot at the second AFC Wild Card spot.

Penn State head coach Bill O’Brien has been rumored to be the favorite for the job, with Lovie Smith as another potential candidate.
