Jets GM pushes Rex Ryan to make coaching changes

Ryan’s job might be safe for now, but GM John Idzik is reportedly forcing him to make changes to his coaching staff.

New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan might not get fired at the end of the season, but there could be changes among his staff. According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, general manager John Idzik is pushing Ryan to make coaching changes on the defense.

Ryan's job appears to be safe for now, but Rapoport says this report "could complicate things." The Jets are set to play the Miami Dolphins on Sunday, hoping to finish the season with a .500 record. Ryan reportedly told his players two weeks ago that he would be fired if the Jets lost the final two games of the year.

Ryan started the year on one of the hottest seats in the league, but the Jets have exceeded expectations despite inconsistent play from rookie quarterback Geno Smith. Albert Breer reported earlier that the Jets haven't done any serious searching for a new head coach candidate, indicating that Ryan will stay, but he could enter 2014 on the hot seat again.
