Jared Veldheer, Raiders talk contract extension

Oaklaind is trying to look up one of its best players with a deal before he hits the open market.

Kirby Lee-US PRESSWIRE

The Oakland Raiders are in the midst of a rebuilding program under general manager Reggie McKenzie, and it appears McKenzie knows who he wants his long-term left tackle to be.

Oakland and current left tackle Jared Veldheer are in talks to make a long-term deal happen before Veldheer becomes a free agent at the end of this season, according to CSN Bay Area. The Raiders have a ton of cap space with a bevy of contracts coming off the books for the 2014 offseason, and Veldheer might be able to reap some benefits. Per the piece:

“They’re in talks right now,” Veldheer said in an interview with John Lund and Greg Papa. “I’m not worried about that. I’m worried about finishing the year out and playing these last four games. I want to help this team as much as possible and to help turn that page and get going where we need to go.

“I believe that, if I handle that and play as well as I can play, good things will follow there. I’m really hoping and I’m pretty confident that I’ll continue to keep playing in Oakland.”

Veldheer, a fourth-year left tackle, has proven to be one of the better left-side linemen in the NFL. Veldheer, after sustaining a torn triceps in the preseason and being placed on the injured reserve-designated to return list, made his return to the field on Thanksgiving.

Considering the position Veldheer plays, he is likely to get one of the richest contracts in franchise history. Jason Peters is the highest paid left tackle of all-time, making a base salary of $10.4 million.
