Rex Ryan, Jets working on contract extension, per report

Ryan’s big win over Miami on Sunday has not only preserved his job, but possibly earned him a new contract.

Not only is Rex Ryan sticking around in New York, he may be getting a contract extension. In the aftermath of the Jets' upset win over the Miami Dolphins on Sunday, multiple sources are saying the team plans to offer the head coach a new deal.

Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News is reporting Ryan and the Jets have a “shared understanding” that they’ll be able to work out a new contract, while Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network claims Ryan is looking for a long term deal. No specifics on the makeup of a possible deal have been mentioned nor has there been any word on exactly how close the two sides are.

Ryan’s current contract runs through the end of 2014. He is due $3.3 million next season.

The Jets beat the Dolphins 20-7 to end their season on a two-game winning streak and finish with an 8-8 record. While it’s the third consecutive year they have failed to make the playoffs under Ryan, the .500 record is a vast improvement over what many predicted this season. Shortly after the game, the team announced it would be retaining him for a sixth season.

The forward momentum and a young roster is apparently enough to make the Jets think Ryan is worth keeping around.
