Head coach Jim Schwartz said Johnson will most likely need surgery on his right knee following Sunday's 14-13 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. Johnson was held out of the meaningless contest because of the ailing knee, which was injured in September and has lingered throughout the season.
The surgery is not expected to be major, but more of a clean-up. The knee has been drained a couple of times this season, allowing Johnson to stay on the field while Detroit was still in pursuit of the NFC North title.
It is hard to tell Johnson was in much pain by looking at his numbers. The former No. 1 overall pick back in 2007 amassed 84 catches for 1,492 yards and a dozen touchdowns, leading the Lions in all three categories. Last year, Johnson broke the single-season receiving yardage record with 1,964.
