Raiders rumors: Lamarr Houston expects to hit free agency

Oakland might lose one of its best defenders on the open market this offseason.

Ed Szczepanski-US PRESSWIRE

Oakland Raiders defensive end Lamarr Houston believes he will be testing free agency, according to Jerry McDonald of the Contra Costa Times.

Houston has been one of the more consistent performers on the defensive side of the ball for Oakland since being drafted in the second round of 2012 out of Texas. The 26-year-old had the best season of his career, tying a previous career-high of 69 tackles and posting a career-best six sacks.

Houston led the Raiders in sacks this season and has been viewed by many as a player to build around going forward. However, he believes Oakland wants to move on from him, per the piece:

“I believe that Dennis Allen and the Raiders might be looking to move on and have me go to another team and find something more what they want for their system and their scheme,” Houston said. “Who knows? It’s a rough business, and nothing’s guaranteed, and everything changes from day to day.”

For once, the Raiders have plenty of money should they want to sign Houston. With more than $50 million to spend before hitting the salary cap limit, Houston could easily fit into their plans. The only other major free agent for Oakland is left tackle Jared Veldheer.
