Buccaneers rumors: Rich McKay, Lovie Smith among GM, coach options

Two former employees are among the Bucs’ list of possible replacements for Greg Schiano and Mark Dominik.

Update 3:15 p.m. - Lovie Smith is “the favorite” for the Buccaneers coaching job, according to Adam Schefter.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are considering returning a pair of former employees to fill their now-vacant head coach and general manager positions. Among the candidates that the team is considering for the two positions are Lovie Smith (as coach) and Rich McKay (as general manager), according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The Bucs fired coach Greg Schiano and GM Mark Dominik on Monday following a 4-12 season.

Smith spent four years as a linebackers coach for Tampa Bay from 1996 to 2000, helping build a dominant defense that carried the Bucs to three playoff appearances. He went on to serve as defensive coordinator for the St. Louis Rams before spending nine seasons as the head coach for the Chicago Bears. He was fired by the Bears after the 2012 season and is currently out of the league.

McKay, who is the president and CEO of the Atlanta Falcons, was the Bucs' GM from 1993 to 2003, a span in which the team reached the playoffs six times and won Super Bowl XXXVII. Among his accomplishments with the team is the hiring of Tony Dungy and the drafting of Warren Sapp, John Lynch, Mike Alstott, Ronde Barber, Derrick Brooks and Warrick Dunn.
