New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan will retain his job in 2014, but he will be on a short leash.

Ryan was seeking a long-term contract extension from the organization, but will instead receive a one-year deal, according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network. The pressure is now back on Ryan for the Jets to perform, but it’s a preferable situation given the coach was expected to be fired a few weeks ago.

Inconsistent quarterback play and offensive injuries led to an 8-8 record and a near playoff berth, despite a disappointing start to the year. The Jets have struggled to find consistent wins since the team appeared in the playoffs in back-to-back years in 2009 and 2010.

Ryan's future is now directly tied to Geno Smith, provided the quarterback starts for the Jets in his second season. 2013 was unkind to the rookie passer, who finished with 12 touchdowns and 21 interceptions in his first year. His development will need to greatly improve to put the Jets back in the playoffs and solidify Ryan's future with the tram.
