Giants expected to fire Kevin Gilbride, per report

After seven seasons as the offensive coordinator, Kevin Gilbride is likely out in New York.

Coming off a disastrous offensive season, the New York Giants are expected to fire offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride, according to Jordan Raanan of NJ.com.

According to Raanan, high-ranking officials with the Giants believe Gilbride will be fired unless something surprising happens during the upcoming organization evaluations. Giants owner John Mara said there would be changes in the organization and a source told Raanan that head coach Tom Coughlin is unlikely to put his job on the line for Gilbride.

New York is coming off a brutal offensive season. The Giants ranked 28th in total yards and points. Quarterback Eli Manning had one of the worst seasons of his career and led the NFL in interceptions. According to the report, Manning’s issues are a major reason why a change will likely be made. Mara did not mince words when talking about the season.

“I think our offense is broken right now, and we need to fix that,” Mara said, via NJ.com.

Gilbride took over as offensive coordinator midway through the 2006 season and the Giants won two Super Bowls with him calling the plays. The Giants finished in the top 10 in scoring each of the last five seasons before slumping this season. New York’s rushing offense was up and down during Gilbride’s tenure, ranking first in yards in 2008, but dropping to 32nd in 2011. The passing offense, however, was routinely among the most efficient in the league prior to 2013.

If Gilbride is fired, Mike Sullivan could be a candidate to replace him. Sullivan was an assistant coach in New York from 2004 to 2011 before becoming the offensive coordinator in Tampa Bay. He was not retained by the Buccaneers when Greg Schiano was fired on Monday.
