Jon Gruden not interested in NFL coaching positions

The former Super Bowl champion doesn’t want to toe a sideline soon.

SB Nation 2014 NFL Playoff Coverage

Whenever coaching vacancies in the NFL crop up, you can be certain Jon Gruden’s name will come up in the rumor mill.

And just like every year when his name comes up, the Super Bowl winning coach denies his interest. He did that on Monday when asked by the St. Paul Pioneer Press about the coaching job now available in Minnesota.

“I don’t want to be considered for any of these jobs. I don’t want to be considered for anything. There are plenty of good candidates out there. I’m just sick for the guys who can no longer coach their teams.”

Gruden is now the color commentator for ESPN’s Monday Night Football, alongside Mike Tirico, and doesn’t plan on leaving the booth anytime soon. Gruden’s name has come up regarding several of the vacancies, but this latest statement should put those rumors to rest ... for now.

Gruden started his head coaching career in Oakland, coaching there from 1998-2001, before being traded to Tampa Bay where he won a Super Bowl in 2002. Only 50 years old, Gruden presumably still has plenty of tread left on is coaching tires, so it’s hard to say whether he’s done with the business or simply is waiting for the perfect opportunity.
