Buccaneers will interview Lovie Smith, per report

Tampa Bay is looking to fill its coaching vacancy, and could do so with a familiar face.

SB Nation 2014 NFL Playoff Coverage

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will interview Lovie Smith for their head coaching vacancy, according to Ian Rapoport.

Smith has been out of the league only one year, after being fired by the Chicago Bears following the 2012 season. Smith led Chicago to a Super Bowl appearance in 2006 and an NFC Championship game in 2010, where it fell to the Green Bay Packers.

Tampa Bay and Smith already have a long-standing connection, as Smith was the Buccaneers linebacker coach between 1996-2000. Smith then moved onto the St. Louis Rams, where he took the defensive coordinator position and went to the Super Bowl in 2001, falling to the New England Patriots.

The Buccaneers fired Greg Schiano on Monday morning, only two years after hiring him away from Rutgers University. Schiano failed to impress, missing the playoffs in both seasons and starting this campaign 0-8.
