Redskins will interview Sean McDermott, per report

The Washington Redskins will likely interview Sean McDermott, the current defensive coordinator of the Carolina Panthers, according to a report.

SB Nation 2014 NFL Playoff Coverage

The Washington Redskins are set to interview Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott for their vacant head coaching position, according to Joe Person of The Charlotte Observer. Washington owner Dan Snyder gave former head coach Mike Shanahan his pink slip shortly after the team's final regular season game.

Shanahan was given four seasons to make something happen in Washington, but he was unable to get much going and there was way too much controversy in and around the team. Shanahan is to blame for some of it, as is Snyder. What matters here is that the team is looking elsewhere.

McDermott will interview for the job this weekend in Charlotte, according to Person. McDermott is the architect behind Carolina’s second-ranked defense this season. The Panthers are 12-4 and the second seed in the NFC, largely due to the dominant defense under McDermott. It was a unit that, if it under-performed, might have cost Ron Rivera his head coaching job in Carolina.

The Redskins believe their future will lie with quarterback Robert Griffin III, and the team had invested heavily in the offense under Shanahan. McDermott is, obviously, a defensive coach, so it would be interesting to see where the team would place its priorities in the event that McDermott gets the job.

Washington has already been linked to Stanford head coach David Shaw and Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell.
