Kevin Sumlin declines interview requests with NFL teams

The Aggie coach has been a popular target for NFL teams, but he doesn’t plan on leaving College Station anytime soon.

Texas A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin won’t be going to the NFL anytime soon. According to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen, Sumlin has declined all interview requests with NFL teams and plans on honoring his contract at Texas A&M.

Sumlin signed a six-year deal with the Aggies worth $30 million. The contract pays him $5 million a year and would keep him in College Station through the 2019 season. It also includes a $5 million buyout clause should he leave early.

Sumlin has been a popular name in NFL circles since joining Texas A&M in 2012. In his first year, he led the Aggies to a 11-2 record, including a Cotton Bowl victory and a Heisman trophy for quarterback Johnny Manziel. Texas A&M finished 8-4 this season and will be playing in the Chick-Fil-A Bowl. It will be the last college game for Manziel, who already declared for the NFL Draft. Rumors swirled that Sumlin might join him in the pro ranks, but he will be staying in College Station for the foreseeable future.
