Lions rumors: Tom Cable draws Detroit’s interest

The Lions are reportedly interested in former Raiders head coach and currents Seahawks assistant Tom Cable to replace Jim Schwartz.

The Detroit Lions have reportedly shown interest in hiring Seattle Seahawks assistant coach Tom Cable for their vacant head coaching position, according to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press. Per NFL.com's Ian Rapoport, Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll has already spoken to the Lions about Cable, who is currently serving as Seattle's offensive line coach and assistant head coach.

Cable is formerly the head coach of the Oakland Raiders. He took over in Oakland after the midseason firing of Lane Kiffin in 2008. Cable did well enough to get the interim tag removed from his title after the season, but he was let go following the 2010 season after the Raiders went 8-8 and missed the playoffs. Across three seasons, Cable went 17-27 as head coach of the Raiders.

Though Cable’s results as a head coach are mixed, he has earned a lot of respect as a teacher in Seattle, according to Rapoport. After five years under the fiery Jim Schwartz, Cable may be the change of pace the Lions need to get back to the playoffs.
