Redskins interview Seahawks OC Darrell Bevell

Redskins officials have begun the process of replacing Mike Shanahan, interviewing Darrell Bevell on Tuesday.

Seattle offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell interviewed for the Washington Redskins' head coaching vacancy on Tuesday, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Schefter reported that Washington general manager Bruce Allen and other team officials flew to Seattle to conduct the interview. Seattle has a first-round bye and according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, assistant coaches from teams on a bye can be interviewed by other franchises until Jan. 5. Seattle gave Washington permission to interview Bevell, according to Schefter.

Bevell's head-coaching candidacy has increased during the last two years, largely due to his work with quarterback Russell Wilson. Wilson has flourished during his two years in the NFL. Seattle has been among the most-efficient offenses in the league during that span. The Seahawks averaged 5.6 yards per play this season, ninth in the NFL. They finished eighth in points and fifth in yards per point, according to TeamRankings.com.

With Robert Griffin III having a similar skill set to Wilson, Bevell could make a lot of sense in Washington. He utilized Wilson's skills as a passer and runner in combination with a run-first attack led by Marshawn Lynch. The Redskins have Griffin and Alfred Morris on the roster to play similar roles.

Washington isn’t the only team interested in Bevell. On Monday, Minnesota requested permission to interview the Seattle offensive coordinator. Bevell interviewed with Chicago, Jacksonville and Arizona last season.
